Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu), Peru, aug 29 - sep 1, 2012

Aguas Calientes is a small town near Machu Picchu. Trains from Cusco stop here, where all tourists have to change to buses to get to the famous Incan ruins. It is as touristy as it gets. There are no cars in the town and you can easily walk along the rio Urubamba to explore the fascinating flora and fauna or visit the butterfly center and the highly recommended Museo de Sitio M. Ch. Ballón. Machu Picchu itself is a breath-taking sight, especially viewed from above from the peak of the Montaña Machu Picchu. It was a sweaty 1.5 hour walk up steep Incan stairs to the top, but absolutely worth it! Machu Picchu was built with impressive precision, at such a beautiful place on top of a mountain. How the Incans were able to build such an amazing town back in the 15th century remains a mystery. One of the wonders of the world I always wanted to see, and it was amazing. :)
