To quote the China Lonely Planet: "We recommend a three-day stopover Pingyao, an age-old walled town you thought all of China would look like, but actually doesn't." This is China as you might know it from the movies. Beautiful, large city walls, charming courtyard houses and red laterns. It felt a lot more authentic then Lijiang or Shuhe in Yunnan, as locals were doing their every-day chores and actually live in the old town. The market tower is lit up beautifully by night and you can spent hours just wondering around.
